What is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?

SIL is NDIS funding for the support workers who help you with everyday tasks in your home — things like cooking, personal care, medication prompting and building daily living skills. It is usually for people who need a significant amount of support each day, and it is often delivered in a shared home with one to three other residents, though it can also be delivered where you live on your own.
What is the difference between SIL and SDA?

They are two separate types of funding and they are commonly confused. SIL pays for the people who support you. SDA (Specialist Disability Accommodation) pays for the building itself — a home that has been designed or modified for high support needs. You can receive SIL support in a home that is not SDA, which is the case for most of our homes. Your Way Living is registered for SDA but has no SDA vacancies at this time.
Does SIL funding cover my rent?

No. SIL funding covers your supports only. Rent or board, food, utilities and other everyday living costs are paid separately out of your own income, the same as they would be for anyone renting a home. Your support coordinator or plan manager can help you work through what those costs look like before you move in.
How do I get SIL funding in my NDIS plan?

SIL sits under Core Supports in an NDIS plan. It generally needs evidence about the level of support you require day to day, which usually comes from assessments and reports from allied health professionals, and a roster of care setting out how your support would be delivered across the week. Your support coordinator or NDIS planner is the right person to guide this, and we are happy to help put the practical detail together.
Can I choose who I live with?

Yes, as far as we are able to make it work. We take compatibility seriously — who is already in the home, daily routines, interests and support needs all matter, because a mismatched household is the most common reason a placement breaks down. We arrange a walkthrough and a chance to meet the other residents before anything is decided.
